About This Item

Description of Item

5064 - The Story of Iris

Judy Leathers
Pelham, AL    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Thread sketch of Iris is done on sheer fabric and fused to the background. Photo transfer and cotton fabric are appliquéd and quilted by machine.

Artist's Statement: Dame Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was a famous British writer and I always watched for her novels. Why they stopped coming was mystery to me. I wondered why she wasn't writing. I found the answer when I saw the movie "Iris" (2001) The movie was based on her husband John Bayley's memories of their lives as she developed Alzheimer's. (A picture of the couple is shown in the quilt.) The movie was a devastating account of the decline of a wonderful, intelligent and witty woman. What still haunts me is the terror Iris felt and the look in her eyes. That is what I hoped to capture in my quilt. Today there are dementia centers in Ireland and England in her name.
Judy Leathers

Dedication: For everyone helping to fight this disease in any way possible.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.
