About This Item

Description of Item

Quilt #5245 - Fading Away

Jeanie Sakrison Velarde
Cordova, TN    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Ink Jet printed fabric fused, hand applique, I used layers of tulle to make my mother's image fade farther and farther away.

Artist's Statement: I watched my mother slowly fade away. And I knew someday she would no longer remember who I was. That day finally came, but even then, she always knew I was SOMEBODY. Her eyes would light up when I went to see her. By then that was enough... you take what you can get. Then sometimes she would cry and ask where Jeanie was. I would say I'm right here and she would say no, I mean the little girl Jeanie. How do you answer that question? So my quilt shows my mother fading away, with the little girl Jeanie wondering why Mommy no longer knows her.

Dedication: To my mother, Margaret McIntyre Mattox and my grandfather, Elwood Richards McIntyre who both suffered from Alzheimer’s. And to all the families everywhere who are watching their loved ones slowly fade away. And to Ami Simms for the incredible job she has done to turn her passion for quilting into a way to fight this disease.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.
