| Description of Item |
| The Infant Jesus hugs His mother with his back turned to the viewer. This is a characteristic gesture of this Byzantine depiction of the Holy Virgin that boosts the drama of the mother worried for her frightened Child who will face martyrdom. Painted in 2018 by Cathy McConn-Smith, a benefactress of the Dominican Friars, on a handmade original icon board (with wooden slats in the back to prevent warping). The 24 karat gold leaf is applied with egg tempera in the old Russian manner with bole and only the breath of the artist to adhere it. |
