Quilt #4994 - A Family's Storm -

4994 - A Family's Storm

Marlene Woodfield
LaPorte, IN    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Cotton fabrics, Tsukeniko inks, markers, hand and machine applique.

Artist's Statement: Storms have peaks of intensity that terrify and cause the victims to tremble in fear. They also offer periods of relative calm between the thunder bolts and lightening. But then, without warning, the next violent strike causes physical damage beyond repair. Alzheimer's disease is a storm in the life of patients and family members, causing pain and anguish to all, like a powerful "force of nature". Memories are lost, capability deteriorates, and control disappears. In this quilt, the portrait of a mother and daughter shows the physical resemblance that transcends this tragic illness. The daughter gently reassures her mother, "While you do not know my name, I am your daughter. I am with you through the storms of life." The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative unites artists across the nation to raise funds for research in the hope for a brighter day--when storms will end and a cure will be found.

Dedication: In memory of my mother, Ruth Ludders Brown, who always encouraged my art work.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

5034 - Fading Memories, Too

Jean Cheszek
Palatine, IL    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Using family photos, I created a montage for the background. I superimposed photos of my parents when they were young adults serving in the Navy in WWII, and when they were older and suffering from Alzheimer's.

Artist's Statement: My parents both suffered from Alzheimer's. This quilt portrays them as young adults when they each served in the Navy in World War II, and as older adults after Alzheimer's had started to rob them of their memories. The fabric in the quilt is made from photos taken over the course of their lives -- representing all the memories that faded as Alzheimer's progressed. The back of the quilt shows the photos which make up the montage.
Jean Cheszek

Dedication: For my parents, Charles and Marion Schroeder, for whom every stage of life was interesting, even Alzheimer’s.

Quilt #5051 - The Scarlet Letter -

5051 - The Scarlet Letter

Gay Young Ousley
Abilene, TX    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 11.5"

Materials/Techniques: Fusing, hand embroidery, Hand dyeing, machine quilting and machine embroidery.

Artist's Statement: For too long, dementia patients and their families tried to hide their disease and discomfort from their friends, neighbors, even their physicians. The stigma must end. Early detection and treatment are beneficial, allowing the quality of life to continue while the search for the cure goes on. Alzheimer's Disease is not shameful.
Gay Young Ousley

Dedication: My own mother was stricken with Alzheimer's Disease and fought hard to keep anyone from knowing she had a problem. Early treatment could have allowed her to enjoy her grandkids and great-grandchildren, to continue her active social life, and to practice her golf game. This is dedicated to caregivers--may they have the courage to seek treatment as soon as they sense there may be a problem.

Quilt #5064 - The Story of Iris -

5064 - The Story of Iris

Judy Leathers
Pelham, AL    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Thread sketch of Iris is done on sheer fabric and fused to the background. Photo transfer and cotton fabric are appliquéd and quilted by machine.

Artist's Statement: Dame Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was a famous British writer and I always watched for her novels. Why they stopped coming was mystery to me. I wondered why she wasn't writing. I found the answer when I saw the movie "Iris" (2001) The movie was based on her husband John Bayley's memories of their lives as she developed Alzheimer's. (A picture of the couple is shown in the quilt.) The movie was a devastating account of the decline of a wonderful, intelligent and witty woman. What still haunts me is the terror Iris felt and the look in her eyes. That is what I hoped to capture in my quilt. Today there are dementia centers in Ireland and England in her name.
Judy Leathers

Dedication: For everyone helping to fight this disease in any way possible.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Sonia M. Callahan
Piedmont, CA    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Photo transfer, hand dyes; Machine quilted and machine pieced.

Artist's Statement: This quilt's content is the result of asking a friend, who is a caregiver, for an image to depict in an Alzheimer's quilt. Her answer was "medications". Quilt #4466 - Oh, Please Remember Me -

4466 - Oh, Please Remember Me

Audrey Arno
Tuttle, OK    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: The fabrics used in the pieced blocks aim to mimic various shades of purple mourning colors. The decrease in color contrasts indicates the eventual decrease in memory when Alzheimer’s begins. The design uses the Memory Block, a form of an album block which is often used in Friendship and Memory Quilts. Friends and family signed their names in the center of the blocks and the blocks were then put together. The phrase “remember us” is associated with these quilts.

Artist's Statement: Memory and remembrances are so important to our lives. When these attributes begin to fail, it is devastating to everyone concerned, not only the victim but family and friends. Alzheimer’s is a disease that destroys the victims’ memories, their ability to help themselves and eventually ends in their demise after years of struggles and torment. How many caregivers and loved ones have agonized over this decline and hoped for a sudden flash of memory letting them know their parent or spouse or other relative or friend, still knows and does remember them? How many have silently pleaded, Oh please remember me. . .? How many of the affected persons realize during the early stages of the disease that they will not later on remember their closest and most intimate family members? Alzheimer’s must be conquered. Many people are working toward a cure. Ultimately we all hope someone will find the key that will be the beginning of better understanding of the disease, development of effective treatment and medications, and preventive steps that will help end the reign of terror. Working toward that goal is paramount.
Audrey Arno

Dedication: To all those unknown souls who succumbed to Alzheimer’s without the love and affection of family and friends to help them, but who just fell into a pit without knowing or understanding what was happening to them. They, the ones who have no one to remember them, are whom the blank labels on this quilt represent and honor.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Auction ends on October 10, 2013 at 10 p.m. (22:00 military time) Central Standard Time. Winners will be notified by email with payment instructions when the auction is over. Tuttle, OK    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 11.75"

Materials/Techniques: The border is pieced without foundations, while the central area contains drawn and colored cartoons (not the humorous kind) shaped in bubbles which are fused onto the backgrounds.

Artist's Statement: This is the tragic saga of the Lady in Blue who was an active, energetic and talented woman, interested in many things: travel, reading, music, exercise, shopping, being with her family and playing with the children among others. But gradually she began to have problems remembering things, tracking conversations and understanding the content of her reading material. Eventually her family took her to see a doctor and the answer was not good. She soon lost interest in so many areas, and this independent woman began to need help with her current affairs and planning for her future. She lost track of time, and spent much of day in front of the TV, not really understanding or caring about any of it. The children missed her love and companionship and were puzzled by her behavior. She began to wear strange and inappropriate clothing choices. She was frightened and angry at what was happening to her.

Then she began to wander off, away from the people who were helping her and had to be brought back for her own safety. The family and her friends gradually saw her as a ghost of her former self; the children were frightened, puzzled and sad, the adults were anxious, worried and angry at losing her to Alzheimer’s. They were encouraged to help her by taking her to an assisted living place where the caregivers were familiar with the effects of the disease and had the facilities to cope with them. She didn’t understand why she was there, away from her home, though she soon became accustomed to the environment.

But that didn’t stop the insistent worsening of the symptoms. The Lady in Blue was becoming helpless and totally dependent on her caregivers. But even with the diligent efforts of so many to find relief from Alzheimer’s so far there are no survivors of this menace. Her family mourned the end of the Lady in Blue hoping that money, time and science will soon find a way to keep others from the long siege of sadness they have had to endure.
Audrey Arno

Quilt #3362 - The Unknown Spirit -

3362 - The Unknown Spirit

Laura A. Krasinski
Menomonee Falls, WI   USA

Width: 7.75"   Length: 10.75"

Materials/Techniques: Rusted Fabric, Painted Fabric and Hand dyed fabrics; Fused stitched and quilted.

Artist's Statement: I was sitting in the waiting area of a mental health facility reading my quilting magazine. Houston quilt show was about to begin and someone had mentioned a "stay at home challenge" for quilters unable to attend the show. We were to do a quilt for AAQI. Since I thought I had the time I decided," why not?".
Laura A. Krasinski

Dedication: As I was sitting there a man and his mother came in. She was there (I found out later) for her check up. She has Alzheimer’s. She had asked her son very timidly," how old am I? " He replied," 80 years old." She continued in disbelief on how the time has gone by so quickly. After she took a very short walk down memory lane she asked again, "how old am I?"... her son replied," 80." The woman was so sweet and it just seemed so sad to me. I'm naming my quilt THE UNKNOWN SPIRIT... for these unknown people who are dealing with this disease we call Alzheimer’s.

This quilt is displayed with a soda can pull-tab.

Quilt #4920 - FEAR -

4920 - FEAR

Diane Petersmarck
Evanston,IL    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Background and binding are a unique hand dye from QuiltersStitchTogether.com. Stems are ribbon that was inkjet printed. Purchased flowers are watercolor painted. Flower centers are beads, as is the butterfly and the turtle and are both glued and sewn down. Background is free-motion quilted with the words “hope” “love” and “research” with variegated thread.

Artist's Statement: This is a quilt about fear, specifically about the fear a person feels when they realize their mind is not working right. When they can't think straight. When they can't remember the simplest things. My Dad has Lewy Body Disease, a variant of Alzheimer's tied to Parkinsonism. The symptoms are very much the same as any other dementia.

As my family struggled through the early stages of the disease with Dad it was sometimes hard to remember that the motivation behind all the paranoia, anger, frustration and irritability was plain and simple fear. Try to imagine the devastating horror a person must go through as they get the diagnosis, and then realize that they are no longer capable of handling day-to-day situations. Imagine you can no longer remember names, and later, no longer remember the relationships. Strangers all around you, trying to get you to eat, take pills, take a shower, put clothes on. The disease progresses and there are only flashes when you realize with terror that you have no idea what is going on. The natural reaction is to find somebody or something to blame it on. To find a reason, other than that you are losing yourself, for this craziness that is happening.

I feel physical pain in my heart when I think about how terrifying it must have been for Dad to feel himself slipping away and be powerless to stop it. I get sick to my stomach when I think about the hereditary links and realize that I or one of my siblings may face this fear someday.

These days my Dad is beyond the fear. His irritability now stems from not being able to reason through why somebody is asking him to do something. As sad as it is to see him looking at me with blank eyes, I am glad he is no longer afraid. And there are those wonderful moments when he looks at me with love in his eyes, no longer knowing who I am but knowing that he loves me. When he smiles or reaches out for a hug. As horrible a price as he has paid for this "peace", I am glad it is finally his.

Diane Petersmarck

Dedication: To my Daddy, who motivates all my work for the AAQI.
