Memories - Marsha McCloskey -

Memories

Marsha McCloskey
Eugene , OR USA

Width: 15" Length: 15"

Materials/Techniques: Cotton prints, mostly antique fabrics dating from 1890-1910. Batting is wool, small scale design fabrics, machine pieced by Marsha McCloskey, machine quilted by Loretta Orsborn with custom free motion patterns, feathers and flowers, narrow applied binding.

Artist Statement: Prints used in this miniature quilt are over 100 years old, dating from 1890-1910. Collected over many years, most of the patches are from orphan blocks, unfinished quilt tops, or collections of scraps and cut pieces handed down by quilters who would have been contemporaries of my great-great grandmother. The prints are dark indigo blues, more medium cadet blues, black on white shirtings, a caramel and navy woven, and a caramel colored flannel print. With each print came awareness that this piece of fabric had been chosen, cut and sewn by another quilter 100 years ago and that I was sharing her experience. There are memories in the cloth. To be able to reuse the patches, I reduced the Evening Star and Meadow Lily designs to a ½" scale. In freehand machine quilting, Loretta Orsborn created pumpkin seeds and feather plumes beautifully scaled to the pieced design. Color of the quilting threads was matched to the different patches for a delightfully subtle effect that is visible upon close inspection.

Faded Glory - Ricky Tims -

Faded Glory

Ricky Tims
La Veta, CO USA

Width: 15" Length: 15"

Materials/Techniques: Hand-dyed cotton fabrics, made by machine.

Artist Statement: I veered from my typical bright colors and used these paler hues as a symbolic reference to how a once-vibrant person afflicted with Alzheimer's fades to become a shadow, a veiled and foggy representation as it were, of their former self. The flower is dropping petals as each memory fails. Only a hint of what was once thriving, strong, beautiful, and vibrant remains. The spirits of others who have shared the same fate stand on either side, patiently waiting - understanding.

Hanging By A Thread - Pepper Cory -

Hanging By A Thread

Pepper Cory
Beaufort, NC USA

Width: 15" Length: 15"

Materials/Techniques: All shot cottons from the Peppered Cottons collection by Studio E Fabrics. Threads are #16 and #12 Perle cotton by Presencia Thread. The batting is wool by Pellon. While the tiny blocks were sewn over tracing paper initially, after that step (paper was torn away) all other sewing was by hand. Handwork gives me the time to reflect and appreciate the process--call it meditation with a needle.

Artist Statement: This little crazy quilt is to honor my friend and writing collaborator Susan McKelvey. Together she and I wrote the book The Signature Quilt and I learned a great deal from Susan. When my husband and I moved to North Carolina, we bought our house from the McKelveys as well. Bless you Susan.

Pat Holly
Ann Arbor, MI USA

Width: 15" Length: 15"

Materials/Techniques: Silk fabric, Hobb's silk batting, Liberty of London fabric for backing, silk thread and purchased trim; machine appliquéd and machine quilted.

Artist Statement: When I found out this would be the last year for the celebrity auction, I thought about the previous little quilts I have made. I designed this quilt using elements from these previous quilts, kind of like little bits of memory. I think about those suffering from Alzheimer's and how they are left with just bits of memories.

Bell Bottom Blues

Sue Nickels
Ann Arbor, MI USA

Width: 15" Length: 15"

Materials/Techniques: 100% cotton fabric and thread, wool batting, machine quilted.

Artist Statement: My small quilt depicts the words from the "Bell Bottom Blues" by Eric Clapton. "I don't want to fade away - give me one more day - please - in your heart I want to stay". I used soft blue fabric and shades of blue thread starting darker and fading away to lighter threads, from top left to bottom right. I also designed an original feather motif to look like a heart. I thought this is what having Alzheimer's disease must feel like.

Confetti Heart #2 - Laura Wasilowski
Elgin, IL USA

Width: 13" Length: 13"

Materials/Techniques: Hand-dyed and fused fabrics, machine quilted and hand embroidered.

Artist Statement: This piece is a collage of what I call "debris" or the aftermath of art making. It is created from cut away scraps of fabric too precious to discard but no longer large enough to handle. During the construction, I thought about how often we humans must experience loss and how often we manage to gather together and reunite. No matter the loss we always come together, to embrace, to hold dear, to repair and to rebuild.
