Quilt #5251 - Always Remember I Love You -

Quilt #5251 - Always Remember I Love You

Barb Vlack
Saint Charles, IL    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Mixed media: cotton and wool fabrics plus upholstery fabric of unknown content; perle cotton, beads, buttons, antique lace, rickrack; hand and machine appliquéd, machine quilted.

Artist's Statement: Essential things to say to a loved one who is dying include: Please forgive me; I forgive you; Thank you; I love you; I will never forget you; God be with you; Good-bye. As a Christian, I could add, “I’ll see you later.” I am grateful that I had the time to share these very emotional thoughts with each of my parents before they died. The last words I heard from Mom, and later from Dad, were, “I love you, too.” I had closure and peace. This bouquet says the essentials in the Victorian language of flowers: roses for love and forgiveness, rosemary for remembrance, forget-me-nots for everlasting love and remembrance, sweet peas for farewell.
Barb Vlack

Dedication: This is the first Alzheimer’s remembrance quilt that I’ve made since the death of my dad in January 2010. I dedicate this to the memory of Bertram Hanson.

Artist's Statement: According to the Alzheimer's Association, 1 in 8 people over the age of 65 develops Alzheimer’s disease. This quilt reflects our chances. We feel caution in our movements fearful not to stumble or destroy our rhythm of activity. Will Alzheimer's affect our lives personally? Will our juggling act get interrupted as we find the one ball remaining belongs to someone dear to our hearts? We all juggle the chances.
Nanette S. Zeller

Quilt #6080 - Identity Theft 2 -

Quilt #6080 - Identity Theft 2

Mona Follis
Houston, TX    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Cottons, embellishment fibers, strip pieced, machine quilted, fused, machine appliqued, hand applliqued, inking.

Artist's Statement: All of us born healthy expect to stay that way, until illness strikes, then it's always a surprise. This disease is more insidious than most in that it robs us of the very thing that makes each of us who we are - our minds. The yellows and reds representing normality in this quilt fade to the more somber tones of purple and black, showing the progress of losing oneself. The flying geese indicate by subject matter the everyday-ness of our lives until even ordinary things look wrong and dark in the progression of Alzheimer's. The fingerprint fabric represents the imprints left behind on family and friends, even when those closest are unrecognized. The purple ribbon represents hope for a cure.
Mona Follis

Dedication: Honoring my daughter-in-law's mom, Marie, and other friends now living with this disease.

Michele Bilyeu

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Cotton, chiffon, metallics, beads, Inkjet printing

Artist Statement: I grieve for the loss of my father, and honor his strength, determination, and fortitude in helping my mother face the challenges of her Alzheimer's. With this quilt and my own prayers, I pray that other care givers will have the same love and devotion that he had and care for their patients and loved ones, as the people they truly are...and not just who they seem to have become.
Michele Bilyeu

Quilt #5199 - Running Out of Time

Lisa Ellis
Fairfax, VA    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Commercial Cotton Fabrics, Free Motion and Hand Embroidery.

Artist's Statement: With this disease we are always racing against the clock. “I hope Grandma will still recognize John when he graduates in two years.” “I hope Amy gets married before Auntie is too confused to travel.” “If only there would be a new treatment before Grandpa gets any worse”. For Debbie, my friend, we are out of time. She needs to be moved now to Assisted Living. The cure did not come in time for her. I chose the purple thread for Alzheimer’s awareness. The thread is fading as the time is running out. The grey fabrics symbolize the shadows of memories that are left.
Lisa Ellis

Sonia M Callahan
Piedmont, CA    USA

Materials/Techniques: Photo transfer phrases, machine quilted, replicated highway signs, permanent marker, keys as embellishment.

The loss of self navigation opportunity often restricts independence, but the DMV in some states have strict requirements. Once a full diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is made, driving licenses are revoked. Quilt #5222 - Family Harmony -

Quilt #5222 - Family Harmony

Linda Devereaux
Lakewood WA    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 9.25"

Materials/Techniques: Machine pieced, machine quilted.

Artist's Statement: One of the first indications my family had that my sister Judy was having memory problems was when my other sister Donna noticed Judy having difficulty learning and remembering her part in songs for a quartet in which they both sang. The quartet was known as “Family Harmony”.

The central quilt block is called “Harmony” and the four corner blocks represent the members of the quartet. The overlay on one of the corner blocks is to signify my sister fading away.
Linda Devereaux

Dedication: To my sister Donna, who alerted us to changes in Judy’s memory and behavior that ultimately led to her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s-type dementia. I also dedicate this to my family, who rallied together harmoniously to support Judy and each other in a very difficult time.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Quilt #5226 - Sister's Choice, Sisters Choose -

Quilt #5226 - Sister's Choice, Sisters Choose

Linda Devereaux
Lakewood WA    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 11.5"

Materials/Techniques: Machine pieced, machine quilted.

Artist's Statement: It took a while for my family to realize that something was “not right” with my sister and it was difficult for us to decide if and when to step in and get involved and for my sister to allow us to help her.

As my sister Judy’s dementia progressed, it became increasingly difficult for her to make decisions for herself. Because of their geographical proximity, the majority of the decisions for care giving fell to my other sister Donna.

The quilt block known as “Sister’s Choice” was chosen to represent decisions that are made for those who are unable to do so for themselves. The tapered bottom is meant to depict the diminishing decisions those with dementia are able to make for themselves.
Linda Devereaux

Dedication: To my sister Donna who took responsibility for overseeing our sister’s care and for making many tough choices.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Quilt #5230 - Shower with Love -

Quilt #5230 - Shower with Love

Linda Devereaux
Lakewood WA    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Hand appliqued, quilted and embellished.

Artist's Statement: When I think of those who have lost loved ones suddenly through accident or illness, I feel blessed to have had the time to spend with my sister. Even though I knew there was no cure for her dementia, it progressed slowly and I had time to spend with her, to tell her how much I loved her and what she meant to me.

As James Taylor sang “Shower the people you love with love”, Alzheimer’s disease, with its slow progression and precious windows of lucidity, gives us many opportunities to shower loved ones with love.
Linda Devereaux

Dedication: To songwriters who give us the wonderful music that makes our hearts sing.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Quilt #5239 - Broken Memory -

Quilt #5239 - Broken Memory

Peggy Healey Keehner
West Bloomfield, MI    USA

Width: 8"   Length: 11"

Materials/Techniques: I started with a photo transfer of a pictures I took of a butterfly in a garden of purple cone flowers. Using a "Stack and Wack" quilting technique, I fractured the image to form the mini quilt.

Artist's Statement: My interpretation of a memory of a photograph showing a butterfly on purple cone flowers from a person with Alzheimer disease. Much of the photograph remains in tack, some is lost in the seams, and the image is scrambled in its pieces. The quilting pattern represents the signals of the brain trying to pull the image together without success. The complete photograph is placed on the back of the quilt, much like the image being stored in the back of the brain.
Peggy Healey Keehner

Dedication: In memory of John Gerard Goyette.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.

Quilt #5245 - Fading Away -

Quilt #5245 - Fading Away

Jeanie Sakrison Velarde
Cordova, TN    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Ink Jet printed fabric fused, hand applique, I used layers of tulle to make my mother's image fade farther and farther away.

Artist's Statement: I watched my mother slowly fade away. And I knew someday she would no longer remember who I was. That day finally came, but even then, she always knew I was SOMEBODY. Her eyes would light up when I went to see her. By then that was enough... you take what you can get. Then sometimes she would cry and ask where Jeanie was. I would say I'm right here and she would say no, I mean the little girl Jeanie. How do you answer that question? So my quilt shows my mother fading away, with the little girl Jeanie wondering why Mommy no longer knows her.

Dedication: To my mother, Margaret McIntyre Mattox and my grandfather, Elwood Richards McIntyre who both suffered from Alzheimer’s. And to all the families everywhere who are watching their loved ones slowly fade away. And to Ami Simms for the incredible job she has done to turn her passion for quilting into a way to fight this disease.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.
