PADUCAH YURT QUILT AUCTION FOR QUILT CITY USA® MURALS

Paducah Quilt Murals Inc (PQMI) is proud to present an online fundraising auction of quilted yurt panels by popular longarm quilter Linzi Upton, aka The Quilt Quine, from Brigton Farm in Crathes, Scotland. Auction sales benefit Paducah’s Quilt City USA® Murals project.

WE'VE EXTENDED THE DEADLINE!

The Paducah Yurt Quilt Auction opens Monday, April 16 and runs through Monday, April 30, 2018 WEDNESDAY, MAY 2 at 9 PM EST. No need to be present to bid–the Paducah Yurt Quilt Auction is online and mobile only.

ABOUT THE QUILTED YURT PANELS

Yurts are Mongolian tribal dwellings based on a 5,000-year old circular design. Linzi’s first encounter with a yurt was at a mid-winter folk music festival at a Scottish castle. Soon afterward she decided to commission a 15-foot yurt as an outdoor garden den. The concept of a quilted yurt occurred to her while contemplating how to insulate her backyard yurt. After committing to this visionary venture, it soon became apparent that piecing and quilting nearly 20 intricate panels was a little ambitious so she turned to her virtual friends on the APQS forum and appealed for Stunt Quilters. “I was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response and eventually had to ask people to stop offering their help,” said Linzi. “I had a range of volunteer Stunt Quilters from beginners to highly skilled quilters all over the USA, Canada and England.”

Since then, Linzi has made two quilted yurts–which have been admired throughout Europe in Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Newcastle, Durham and London. The Quilted Yurt USA exhibited in America for the first time at AQS QuiltWeek Des Moines before landing in its new home at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. The Paducah Yurt Quilt Auction panels are some of Linzi’s original panels plus replacements she made after sending the “Stunt Quilter” panels to Wisconsin, where the many of the makers were thrilled to be able to see the magnificent finished project.

ABOUT QUILT CITY USA® MURALS

Quilt City USA® Murals is a privately funded mural series featuring painted renderings of actual quilts on the floodwall adjacent to the Schroeder Expo Center in Paducah, Kentucky–the location of the annual AQS QuiltWeek® Spring and Fall events. This mural project will serve as a visual history of quiltmaking and aid in the development of an educational program on quilts and quiltmaking in the United States and abroad.

Paducah recognizes quilting’s role in documenting history–one that began long before the early settlers arrived in the new world and continues to involve and inform the present. The purpose of Quilt City USA® Murals is to honor that history by integrating two ancient and modern artforms–quiltmaking and mural painting.

Paducah proudly unveiled the first mural in September 2017 in conjunction with the premier of AQS Quilt Week Fall and the occasion of Solar Eclipse 2017. The image, painted by lead artist Char Downs of Pinecone Gallery in Paducah, features the iconic quilt Corona II: Solar Eclipse by world-recognized quilter Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry.

We kindly invite you to join us in advancing the progress of the Quilt City USA® Murals project by participating in this unique auction opportunity to own one of Linzi’s beautiful artisan ethnic textiles.
