Quilt #13,402 - Finger Lake Log Cabin -

Audrey Arno
Tuttle, OK USA

Width: 9" Length: 9"

Designer: Judy Martin from her Log Cabin Quilt Book , used with written permission.

Materials/Techniques: The fabrics are all batiks. There are many pieces in this quilt, but I never came up with the same count twice. I think it is between 780 and 800 pieces with some of the pieces only a scant 1/8 inch. It is lightly quilted with clear thread.

Artist Statement: Yes, this is a log cabin block, with many of the logs pieced. It is named after the original, much larger quilt in Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilt Book but made with fewer blocks, each reduced in size. It was so innovative I just had to try and make one.

Quilt # 13,441 - Iris Lacustris -

Betyann Shaver
Aiken, SC USA

Width: 7.25" Length: 9.25"

Materials/Techniques: Scrunch dyed fabric, silk ribbon embroidery and beads.

Artist Statement: What is a Dwarf Lake Iris? The Dwarf Lake Iris is a miniature iris with showy deep blue flowers. They only grow around the Great Lakes shorelines in cool, moist lakeshore air. Their habitat has been greatly reduced so that they have been added to the endangered list. This is much like protecting our loved ones who have Alzheimer’s. We change their environment to keep them from harm. We try to stimulate their memory and as they slip away, all we can do is love them.

Artist Statement: The Weaver's Log Cabin blocks were designed by Judy Martin, and published in her book Scraps, Blocks & Quilts. The border was my idea to mimic the weave of the blocks and I thought a bow from the "ribbon" would tie it all together.

Quilt # 13,766 - Three Daffodils -

Jean Cheszek
Palatine, IL USA

Width: 8.75" Length: 9.75"

Materials/Techniques: Photo printed on fabric and quilted.

Artist Statement: Daffodils always remind me of spring and of my father--every year he would divide and replant the daffodils forming the border of our yard and the adjacent woods. Over time there were thousands of daffodils that would welcome us each spring. Here are some of his memories of growing up during the 1930's: "We lived in a rural area. Our house didn’t have electricity, running water, central heat or a telephone. It was heated with coal using an iron, pot-bellied stove that actually got red hot when it was going full blast. We sifted the ashes to salvage any coal that went through the grates. Without electricity or running water it’s obvious that we didn’t have inside plumbing; therefore, we had an outhouse. Every year we had a big garden. We also raised chickens and at one time we had geese in the back yard. We had about an acre and a half. The school that I went to was a two room school with two teachers. There were five students in my class.” — Charles Schroeder, on his childhood in the 1930′s

Quilt # 13,621 - Peter and Paul Stars -

Martha Wolfersberger
Frenchtown, MT USA

Width: 9" Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Machine pieced using cotton fabrics and threads, machine quilted using cotton batting with cotton and rayon threads.

Artist Statement: There are several block patterns that are sometimes called “Robbing Peter to Pay Paul.” They are made from pairs of dark and light fabrics and constructed in such a way as to appear that pieces of fabric are taken from one block and used in the other. I used that principle to make both the star blocks and the blocks in the pieced inner border of this little quilt.

This quilt has Fast Finish Triangles.
