4466 - Oh, Please Remember Me

Audrey Arno
Tuttle, OK    USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: The fabrics used in the pieced blocks aim to mimic various shades of purple mourning colors. The decrease in color contrasts indicates the eventual decrease in memory when Alzheimer’s begins. The design uses the Memory Block, a form of an album block which is often used in Friendship and Memory Quilts. Friends and family signed their names in the center of the blocks and the blocks were then put together. The phrase “remember us” is associated with these quilts.

Artist's Statement: Memory and remembrances are so important to our lives. When these attributes begin to fail, it is devastating to everyone concerned, not only the victim but family and friends. Alzheimer’s is a disease that destroys the victims’ memories, their ability to help themselves and eventually ends in their demise after years of struggles and torment. How many caregivers and loved ones have agonized over this decline and hoped for a sudden flash of memory letting them know their parent or spouse or other relative or friend, still knows and does remember them? How many have silently pleaded, Oh please remember me. . .? How many of the affected persons realize during the early stages of the disease that they will not later on remember their closest and most intimate family members? Alzheimer’s must be conquered. Many people are working toward a cure. Ultimately we all hope someone will find the key that will be the beginning of better understanding of the disease, development of effective treatment and medications, and preventive steps that will help end the reign of terror. Working toward that goal is paramount.

Dedication: To all those unknown souls who succumbed to Alzheimer’s without the love and affection of family and friends to help them, but who just fell into a pit without knowing or understanding what was happening to them. They, the ones who have no one to remember them, are whom the blank labels on this quilt represent and honor.

This quilt is displayed with Fast Finish Triangles.
