Functional and decorative pottery. When the clay is malleable, the potter has to work to achieve their goal, but always within the limitations of the structural ability of the soft material. I enjoy pushing the boundaries of the clay by making the walls thinner, taller, wider, or bigger. The challenge is rewarding when successful and a learning experience when the results are not achieved. This challenge is my inspiration to create unique forms.

Laura has always been attracted to the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. Without each of them, pottery would not be possible. The elements are dependent on each other in order to create the simplest of forms but too much of one can destroy what you are working on at any stage of the process. For her, the necessary processes of letting go and detachment are very therapeutic. Each piece of pottery is as unique as individuals are. Clay from the earth is mixed with water, formed by the potter’s hand, dried with air and fired to create a simple cup. But pick one up and really get to know it. Find that little thing that makes it unique, imperfect, beautiful. Do this and you’ll never look at two cups the same again!

After a 30 year career in information technology, my focus, time, and energy has taken a major shift to creating vibrant Raku sculptures, wearable jewelry art, and unusual copper creations. From a relatively simple palette of raw materials consisting of clay, copper, and natural stones, I strive to create unique jewelry, pottery, and sculptural forms. I often combine more than one of my media in a single piece of sculpture. When I start a piece, I don’t have a detailed plan but I embrace the unpredictability of the media I work with.

The process of working with clay, its three-dimensional qualities and the effects of glazes, texture, and the variety of clay bodies, all provide rich and rewarding experiences. While the end product can be a surprise given all the possibilities that go into creating each form, it is the gentle, facilitating of the clay that is the primary experience. In learning wheel throwing I tried to force the form with external strength and overpowering force, only to discover the best practice is always to allow the clay to be centered with a lack of pressure. So too is life about allowing our inner strength to form and develop one's path, becoming engaged in the process and its connection with life.
