The Empty Bowls of Denton has been fighting hunger in the Denton community since 2000. All of the proceeds from our annual luncheon benefit the Denton Community Food Center and Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.  This year’s virtual fundraiser will replace the annual luncheon and proceeds will be distributed to the organizations below.

The Denton Community Food Center provides food from a central community storehouse to needy families and individuals struggling with hunger insecurity.

The need is great! July 2020 saw as much food distributed as was distributed in all of 2019. Now 40-60% of their clients each week are first-time visitors having never asked for assistance before.

Records were set with more families being processed in one day than used to be done in a 5 day week, and with 219 households getting 19,929 lbs of food, or about 16,600 meals in a day. The move to a new facility makes it possible to meet increased needs. Numbers have been on a steady increase since March 15th, 2020 and staff is forecasting to be in a “drive-thru” distribution model into 2021. Denton Community Food Center has been run by an all volunteer team for the last 46 years.

Our Daily Bread feeds and cares for the homeless and at-risk in our community while maintaining the dignity of their guests, and offering opportunities for a new start.  Hot meals, counseling, and warm clothes are just part of what they offer.  Our Daily Bread is a community kitchen. It serves the hungry, no questions asked. It is a not-for-profit, secular charity.  In 2020, all aspects of their organization and those they serve have been impacted.  Meals served have increased 25%, with an average of 476 meals served daily.  While many people are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing homelessness, and find it difficult to access food and other essential resources, Our Daily Bread is tailoring their services to bridge that gap.
