Bowl by Noriko Dewitt & Alex Macias -

Size: 8" diameter x 11" high

Technique: Wheel thrown, then sgraffitoed over underglaze. Fired to Cone 5.

About the Artists

The bowl is a collaboration between Noriko DeWitt and Alex Macias. Noriko and Alex wanted to do something positive after the rough year of 2020. They discussed the message they wanted to share, that of peace, love, and harmony, and Noriko incorporated that into her design. The bowl was thrown using MB White Stoneware, a porcelain-hybrid clay that would act as a smoother, white-firing finish. Alex then applied blue underglaze to half of the bowl so that when carved, a portion of the bowl would be white with embedded colored lines, and the other would be blue with white lines. The bowl was waxed with a cold wax to help retain moisture and limit color cross-contamination. Noriko then carved the intricate 2D design she initially created into the now 3D bowl. After many hours of carving, Noriko's 360° design was complete. To highlight some of the important aspects of her design, they inlaid colors of purple, greens, and more blues. The bowl then went through its final drying and firing processes to make it not only enjoyable for display but also dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe.
