STATEMENT: Barbara loves living in the country on a farm in the Shenandoah Valley.  She has many wonderful memories of her children playing in this barn and created this art quilt from a photo. 

BIO: Barbara is a teacher, lecturer, and author of 5 books.  She is a big talent in the world of quilting.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: 100 cotton fabrics. Machine Applique and Machine Quilted.

Hospitality -

Size: 28" Octagonal

Statement: Donna loved this timeless pattern that she purchased in Williamsburg, VA. The pineapple is a symbol of hospitality in Colonial Amercia, so whether used as a wall-hanging or table mat, the quilt says "welcome to all".

Bio: Donna began quilting in 1993 and does all styles of quilting. Her favorite technique is applique. She is a member of the Charlottesville Area Quilters Guild and a long standing member and supporter of the Virginia Quilt Museum.

Materials/Techniques: Cotton fabrics, Paper-pieced, Machine quilted.

Castle Ruins -

Statement: Betty Lu enjoys making landscape quilts. This quilt is from a photo in upstate New York. Betty Lu was inspired by the challenge of the tree foliage and the stone wall. The castle was her own inspiration - far more interesting than the house in the original photo!

Bio: Betty Lu has been quilting for over 35 years and is an award winning quilter. She has exhibited in many shows in the United States and Canada.

Distelfink -

Credit: Design by Irene Blanck in her book Focus On Applique

Statement: Janet was inspired to do one of Irene Blanck's patterns. She chose the distelfink from the quilt entitled "Mosaics" because she grew up in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The distelfink represents happiness and good fortune.

Bio: Janet has been quilting over twenty years. She enjoys making traditional quilt patterns by hand and machine as well as small art quilts.

Materials: Cotton fabrics, Fused applique with machine blanket stitch, Hand embroidery, Buttons embellishments, Big stitch quilting, and Machine quilting.

One Tree -

Size: 13 1/2 "W x 22 1/2"L

Statement: Ann was inspired by one beautiful tree that stood alone in the middle of a cornfield near Scottsville, VA. Later, a bad storm felled the tree and now the field stretches flat edge to egde.

Bio: Ann began quilting in 1995 while living in Japan. She started with handquilting but now prefers free motion quilting on a domestic machine. Ann makes both bed quilts and wall quilts and has won awards in juried shows for her machine skills.

Materials: Silk fabric from antique Japanese obi and kimonos.  Originial photo manipulated with Adobe elements and printed on silk.

Three Pineapples and One More                       -

Size: 5 1/2" W X 9" L  and 17 1/4" W X 13 1/2" L

Statement: Paula was inspired by the "Virginia is for Lovers" theme.  She wanted her work to welcome all to Virginia so she incorporated the universal pineapple in her design.

Bio: Paula was selected as “2001 Teacher of the Year” by The Professional Quilter Magazine. She has been quilting since the early 1970s and teaching for over twenty years. Her quilts, patterns and articles have been published in magazines and books. Paula is a past president of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Quilt Museum and co-author of the book, “Quilts of Virginia: Birth of America through the Eye of a Needle.

Materials: These quilts are made from 100% cotton and machine pieced and machine quilted.  This item contains two different quilts.

Inspiration:  Hazel was given fabric - fabric that was not her Style so she decided to challenger herself to make a group of small quilts.  The project was quite fun.  In fact, Hazel enjoys two small quilts from the project each day right in her own living room!

Bio: Hazel is a well known quilt historian and appraiser and the founder of the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana.  She is also a founding member and organizer of Quilters Unlimited in Northern Virginia.  Her writings include many quilt articles and the introduction to Quilts of Virginia 1607-1899 published by Vorginia Consortium of Quilters.  For all of Hazel's research, writings, and organizing, her main interet has always been simply quilting, being with quilters, and exchanging ideas and techniques.     She has served on the Board of Directors, the Adivsroy Board and on the exhibit and collections committees of the Virginia Quilt Museum.
