Clues in the Calico A Guide to Identifying and Dating Antique Quilts (good condition, slight scuff on binding) unveils a much-needed system for dating America's heirloom quilts.  She tells how, by collecting and observing quilts and finally analyzing her computer file on close to 900 date-inscribed specimens, she arrived at the system.  And through this telling she also imparts a colorful, stunningly-illustrated history of quiltmaking along with a good bit of entertaining social history and the newest finding in textile research.

Civil War Sampler (good condition) Lean more about Civil War women through this special compilation of quilt block patterns, combined with period photos and fir-person accounts.  Choose from a variety of pieced or appliqued blocks, each shown in two colorways with instructions for assembling two sizes (8" and 12")

Quilts from the Civil War (excellent condition). Quilts and their makers are an integral part of the story about this incredible period of American History.  Barbara Brackman offers a rarely discussed perspective from half of those who lived through it - the women of the North and the South.  Included are complete instructions for nine projects, which are adapted from historical quilts and convey an authentic feel.  Definitely modern quilt making techniques will inspire both faithful reproductions and contemporary adaptations of Civil War era quilts.  The book includes tips for using today's reproduction fabrics and suggestions for achieving a period look.

3 Hardback Book Set -

3 Hardback Book Set with dust covers, condition on all are very good

Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 World's Fair.  The Sears National Quilt Contest and Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition.  Authors:  Marikay Waldvogel and Barbara Brackman  The Sears National Quilt Contest stands as one of the most important events in American quiltmaking history because in a short period of time it encouraged the making of tens of thousands of quilts by women vying for the grand prize of $1,200.00 and the honor of having their quilts on public display.  Quilt contests have been organized since, but none has been as successful in attracting so many entries.

Soft Covers for Hard Times Quiltmaking and The Great Depression Author: Marikay Waldvogel  This book describes the rich, exciting story of quiltmaking during the Great Depression.  The result of several years research, this volume recounts the burst of activity in quiltmaking, as well as the surprising array of colorful, pastel quilts during this period.

The Quilts of Tennessee Images of Domestic Life prior to 1930 Authors: Bets Ramsey and Merikay Waldvogel  In 1983 Bets and Merikay began the Tennessee Quilt Project, a survey and documentation of the existing quilts of Tennessee made prior to the 1930's.  The Quilts of Tennessee presents the results of their work.  It is a definitive study of Tennessee quilts, their distinctive qualities and the characteristics that link them with similar quilts from other parts of the nation.

When they began the project the authors expected to find that Tennessee's quilts reflected the diversity of the state.  They were not disappointed.  Among their findings were many exceptional quilts of high quality, many ordinary quilts of practical value, and a number of unorthodox quilts of unusual design.

Eleanor Burns 3 set Quilt in a Day books -

Eleanor Burns set of 3 soft back books

Quilt in a Day - All Star Quilts (excellent condition) The All Star Quilt by Eleanor Burns is out of this world! Join our bright constellation of celebrities as they assist Eleanor in making four unique stars.  Along with their blocks, Marianne Fons, Alex Anderson, Nancy Zieman and Mark Lipinski are each saluted for their stellar contributions to the quilting galaxy.  The prize winning Feathered Star is as easy as a Bear's Paw, with triangle pieced squares, strip pieced diamonds, and no set in seams.  This book is the best ever with detailed instructions that only Eleanor Burns can write!

Quilt in a Day - Lover's Knot Quilt Easy Strip Piecing (excellent condition) To celebrate her 30th anniversary and the marriage of her oldest son, Eleanor perfected the Lovera s Knot pattern using her signature 2 1/2 strips. Add a touch of romance to any room with this lovely quilt. The elegant pattern uses two strips intertwined to makea knot. The graceful, flow of the quilt is made with two basic, strip pieced blocks. By using color and value in your fabrics, the Lovers Knots stand out to show unity. The blocks are set a point a for a dramatic effect and corners can either be squared or diagonal. Eleanor offers step by step illustrations and instructions to direct the quilter to a successful finish. There are yardage and cutting charts for all 5 quilt sizes and border options for a personalized quilt. Included with the Lovers Knot quilt pattern, Eleanor gives directions for making a matching dust ruffle with tips on measuring and sewing the ruffle. A miniature wallhanging and long and short table runners are bonus projects in the book. They are pieced with narrow 1 1/2 strips for a charming petite finish.

Quilt in a Day - The Magic Vine Quilt (excellent condition) Grow a flower garden in beautiful fabrics to grace your bed or wall as Eleanor Burns presents Magic Vine. The patterns for Magic Vine originated in the 1930's in a newspaper quilt column written by Florence LaGanke Harris. As part of a series, LaGanke presented one new pattern each week. In addition to the pattern, the reader was treated to a fictitious story about a quilt group and their leader, Nancy Page. In the group, they shared stories, and decided on what colors to use for their flowers. Twenty-two flowers are appliqued in rows with twinning vines. It is magical because of the variety of flowers that grow on the vine. The vine grows quickly, like the magic vine in Jack and the Beanstalk. Whimsical flowers and leaves are easily made, using lightweight paper backed adhesive or the quick turn method using non-woven fusible interfacing. The outside edges are finished with a variety of techniques: satin stitch, blanket stitch, blind hemstitch, and hand applique. Give Magic Vine a traditional 1930's look using reproduction fabrics or bright and contemporary with vibrant batiks. Enjoy embellishing the flowers with hand or machine stitches, beads, and crystals. Eleanor offers assistance on fabric selection and yardage and cutting charts for all five quilt sizes. Bonus projects are included. The book is conveniently bound in wire-o to lay flat.

Quilt Top -

Quilt Top - Machine pieced 50" X 59". Various red prints with white accents.

Pieced Heart Quilt Top contributed by the late Mary Cross and Hazel Carter, Vienna VA.  Mary won the blocks and later gave them to Hazel who pieced them into this top in 2015.  There are 12 quilt blocks with hearts. 2 blocks are embroidered with the messages, "Leading cause of death among women" and "is cardiac disease".  Blocks are both hand and machine pieced.

Per Hazel Carter, founder of The Quilters Hall of Fame, "The embroidered statement is one that earlier I used to tell people about women and heart attacks, for when I experienced my first attack, it was known at that time that women often failed to understand heart attacks.  We didn't understand that women's attacks often were different than what a man experiences.  This was back in 1992.  As the doctor told me at that time, ten years earlier we might have just had to let you die, but since then we have learned a great deal more about women and heart attacks."

Found in Indiana; maker unknown. From the collection of Linda Koenig, author of Scrap Quilts and Ratsburg Road Quilts, (both published by Quiltmaniaand The 4 "x 5" Quilt-Block Anthology. Published on p. 17 of Scrap Quilts (Mania) by Linda Koenig, (France: QuiltMania, 2012). Forty-nine mixed print nine-patch blocks in rows of 7 alternating with 6.5" squares of bright yellow calico with red and black figures.  Three and a half inch borders of the same calico frame the design field, and the natural muslin back is brought to the front to form binding.  Machine pieced and joined, hand quilted in 2" square lattice on the diagonal over the entire surface.  Several holes repaired in age-appropriate fabric, otherwise good condition.  In Scrap Quilts, Linda says of this quilt "I resist the urge to select fabric for setting blocks, sashing, or even borders until all the blocks are pieced.  The color of that setting fabric can all by itself determine the final appearance of the quilt. Navy and burgundy blocks could actually become a yellow quilt!" (Donated by Bryn Inman in memory of her mother Linda Koenig)
